Where is the serial number on a sousaphone? ›

Description. The model number and serial number are stamped on the side of the valve casing at piston 2. Note: On YEP-842 and YEP-642 series models only, the model number is stamped on the valve casing at piston 2 and the serial number on the valve casing at piston 1.

The first sousaphone was built by James Welsh Pepper in 1893 at the request of John Philip Sousa, who was dissatisfied with the hélicons in use by the United States Marine Band. Some sources credit C.G. Conn with its construction, because of the first sousaphone he built later in 1898.

Tubas and baritone horns most often have the serial number on the center valve or on the mouthpiece receiver. French horns may display serial numbers on or around the valves, on the underside of the key area, or near the mouthpiece. Flute serial numbers can be found on the back of the body, or middle joint.

Some instruments will have serial numbers engraved on the plate connecting the neck to the body. Some models will have the serial number on the back of the headstock. Some basses will have the serial number under the intonation screws on the bridge plate.

For US instruments, the serial number will start with a letter. That letter indicates the decade. The second character will usually be a number. That number indicates the specific year.
