Bruce Payne saw his own performance as a racist super-terrorist in Passenger 57 and said "you know, I could do that again." Never as sustained and stylishly cartoonish as Stone Cold but has the same bizarre, outlandish energy, only hampered by a flirtation with family values - dead wife and kid, wise-talking kid sidekick (sorta), the inclusion of M.C. Hammer, etc. Speaking of which, Hammer is introduced stiffly echoing a famous mafia gesture and I don't think I've laughed that hard in a long time. Lots of fun.

Sgt. John North's (Brian Bosworth) family is killed in a weapons deal gone wrong, and after being stonewalled by the government in his pursuit of vengeance against their killer (Jeff Kober), he descends into a Los Angeles filled with drug cartels, corrupt agents and a shipment of dangerous superguns.

Well...that was no Stone Cold. That realization, plus that moment when it dawned on me that Mikey would be sticking around as an actual supporting character, was very disappointing.

I can't say I've ever been a gigantic Bruce Payne fan, but I have to respect the defiance of coming into this more grounded revenge actioner, which is exploring the drug and weapons trade of 90's L.A., and choosing to play his character as the cop-pire Lestat, who might fit nicely into some other, bizarrely heightened story...but maybe not so much here?

That fall was pretty well done, though.

    aka ONE TOUGH BASTARD

Mister geilo EQULIBRIUM? Oder auch Mister sh*t from Ultraviolet!!

Dann BRUCE PAYNE!! MC HAMMER!! NEIL MCDONOUGH!! ROBERT LASARDO!!

I had a blast with Brian "Boz" Bozworth's masterful debut "Stone Cold" but didn't bother to check out any of his other movies. "One Man's Justice" is a showcase of why I might need to do a little retrospective/marathon of this "Tough Bastard" AKA the "Boz"!

"One Man's Justice" AKA "One Tough Bastard" AKA "North's War" starts with your typical action set up. Crazed whacko's kill Bosworth's wife and daughter and leave him for dead in a convenience store. He recovers from his coma and finds out that the bad guys are tied in with crime lord M.C. Hammer who is tied in with the craziest guy in the movie crooked FBI agent Karl Savak played by Bruce Payne.

    This…

"One Man's Justice"?? This movie is clearly called One Tough Bastard, which is definitely what it was called when I rented it on VHS more than once in the nineties, DUE TO THE FACT THAT IT WAS CALLED ONE TOUGH BASTARD.

Anyway, this is weirdly well-made for a movie that's called One Tough Bastard, but it's also beyond generic and the story is all over the place. I do like the part where a guy says "he's one resilient son of a bitch", which was probably the movie's original title before they came up with a snappier version.

This movie is called One Tough Bastard.

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

Where else are you going to see Bruce Payne gunning down MC Hammer with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth?

  • Review by Wade Garrett ★★★ 7

"You're gonna be in my dog and pony show until the pony dies, pony! What do you think this is? Monopoly? And you've got a 'Get Out of Jail Free' card? You killed a little girl. Now you do what I say or you're gonna be blowing your chunks in the gas chamber. It's a beautiful day. Enjoy it."

Some high quality cheese here. Like a Steven Seagal flick but without the compulsion to lionize its protagonist. Brian Bosworth is just a regular dude who tries too hard to act and is hilariously un-self-aware. He nobly growls at everyone and awkwardly punches and kicks them, but gets his ass beat as often as he wins.
    Bruce Payne as the villain…

  • Review by Chuck Dowling ★★★

The main villain making a note to kill one of his henchmen on a To Do list is one of the funniest goddamn things I’ve ever seen.

  • Review by Dan Gorman ★★½ 2

I'd be interested to read up about the troubled production of this to see how much Kurt Wimmer actually shot before getting replaced. Watching the movie, it's like there's individual shots that are going for over-the-top style shoehorned into pretty standard scenes.

The whole movie feels this way - a kid-sidekick plot shoehorned onto a revenge plot, action scenes that seem to want to be more violent than they actually are (was this ever cut down maybe?)

Anyway, it's a watchable mess but a mess nonetheless.

  • Review by Dirk Senger ★★★

  • Review by bilderrahmen ★★★ 2
