Tennessee baseball vs. Evansville score, highlights: Vols win Game 1 (2024)

Tennessee baseball is in a super regional for the fourth straight season.

The No. 1 overall seed Vols (53-11) host Evansville (38-24) in the Knoxville Super Regional starting Friday (3 p.m. ET, ESPN2) at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

Tennessee has reached the College World Series twice in the past three seasons. It is chasing back-to-back trips to Omaha for the first time in program history.

The Purple Aces get back-to-back-to-back hits off of Kirby Connell to score a run. Aaron Combs is in to pitch with two on and nobody out.

Kirby Connell works a scoreless eighth inning. Evansville has struck out 13 times through eight innings.

Tennessee 11, Evansville 5, bottom 7th: Hunter Ensley smacks 3-run home run

Hunter Ensley has broken the game open with a three-run home run to cap a two-out rally for the Vols. Billy Amick hit a double and Dylan Dreiling walked ahead of Ensley's blast.

The Vols lead 11-5 and are six outs away from taking Game 1 of the Knoxville Super Regional.

Tennessee 8, Evansville 5, mid 7th: Kirby Connell pitches clean inning

Kirby Connell retires the Evansville 2-3-4 hitters in order in the seventh inning.

Vols have had an odd hitting day. Christian Moore, Billy Amick. Blake Burke and Hunter Ensley are the only Vols with a hit today, All but Ensley have home runs, and the four have combined for five extra-base hits.

Tennessee 8, Evansville 5, mid 6th: AJ Causey gets out of trouble

With two on and two out, AJ Causey strikes out Evansville leadoff hitter Simon Scherry to end the inning. Causey is up to 82 pitches over 4.2 innings with four hits and three runs allowed along with three walks and eight strikeouts.

Tennessee 7, Evansville 5, bottom 5th: Vols back in front

Evansville CF Ty Rumsey crashed into the wall trying to catch a Blake Burke hit to left-center, and the resulting RBI double drove in Christian Moore. Rumsey had to clean up a cut but remained in the game.

Burke scored later on an infield hit and error by 3B Brent Widder.

Tennessee continues to answer Evansville pretty quickly in Game 1.

Tennessee 5, Evansville 5, mid 5th: Purple Aces tie it up with 3-run 5th

Christian Moore had an error on a bouncing ball near first base with one out and the bases empty, and that changed the entire inning. After a single, Evansville DH Kip Fougerousse hits a two-run double off the wall to make it 5-4 Tennessee.

Chase Hug drives in Fougerousse with a RBI single. 5-5 after four-and-a-half innings at Lindsey Nelson.

AJ Causey has six strikeouts, but Evansville's batters have made some hard contact when they do connect.

Tennessee 5, Evansville 2, bottom 4th: Hunter Ensley's good baserunning results in a run

Hunter Ensley doubled off the wall to open the fourth inning, then eventually scored on a Dean Curley sacrifice fly to medium depth in centerfield. Evansville's Ty Rumsey made a good throw, but Ensley snuck around the tag to score.

Tennessee 4, Evansville 2, bottom 3rd: Billy Amick hits a long one to left

Billy Amick hit a solo home run deep to left field with two out, well over all the tents and seating.

The Vols have connected in this inning against Evansville left-hander Kenton Deverman.

Tennessee 3, Evansville 2, bottom 3rd: Christian Moore 2-run HR

Christian Moore hit a very long, opposite-field two-run home run to right field over the scoreboard. That one was launched.

Tennessee retakes the lead at 3-2.

Evansville 2, Tennessee 1, mid 3rd

Cal Stark played a feature role in that half-inning. Stark was interfered with on a stolen base attempt, producing Evansville's first out after a leadoff walk. Then, AJ Causey struck out Kip Fougerousse and Stark picked off the runner at first base for the double play.

Stark is due up second in the bottom of the third inning.

Evansville 2, Tennessee 1, end 2nd: Inning-ending GIDP

Kavares Tears walked with one out, but Dean Curley grounded into a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning.

Evansville 2, Tennessee 1, top 2nd: Cal McGinnis 2-run HR

Evansville second baseman Cal McGinnis hits a two-run home run to center, and that'll be it for Chris Stamos' day. AJ Causey is trotting in from the bullpen. The Purple Aces lead 2-1 early.

This is the second straight NCAA Tournament game where Stamos has struggled before Causey enters for the bulk of the day's pitching work.

Blake Burke lines a solo home run off the scoreboard in right field. The Vols lead 1-0.

Tennessee 0, Evansville 0, mid 1st inning

Chris Stamos was fired up for his first inning of work, striking out the side. He yelled out after the first K, then strutted off the mound with intent on the third punch out. Vols appear very engaged and are coming to bat in the bottom of the first inning.
