Like Zillow, Trulia is also an online residential real estate website that connects home sellers with buyers, renters, and real estate professionals in the United States. With a business model similar to Zillow's, Trulia was acquired by Zillow Group in 2015 for $3.5 billion.

That data is only shared with the Realtor community and tax entities. In some parts of the country, Trulia and Zillow are highly accurate — but those are areas with “open record” laws. In closed record states, Trulia and Zillow use tax appraisals for valuation. Again, in our market, the tax appraisals are inaccurate.

Just like Zillow, Trulia offers real estate listings for prospective home buyers, sellers, and renters. Also like Zillow, Trulia makes most of its money from advertising. Even though the company is now owned by Zillow, it provides users with a different experience online.

Zillow's biggest competitor is Redfin, an online real estate brokerage that provides home value estimates and other tools for home buyers and sellers. It seeks to disrupt traditional brokerages like Zillow's Premier Agent and Broker advertising services.

What does Trulia estimate mean? ›

A Trulia Estimate is an approximate calculation of a home's market value. It is not an appraisal; it is a starting point in determining a home's value.

The Redfin Estimate is highly accurate, with a current median error rate of just 1.96% for homes that are for sale, and 7.31% for off market homes. This means that when a home that is currently on the market sells, the Redfin Estimate will be within 1.96% of the sales price half of the time.

Most of the time, Zillow and Redfin have different estimates for your house because they have slightly different approaches to calculating home values. However, if there's a big gap between your Zestimate and Redfin Estimate, it may mean that one company has inaccurate information about your home.

Last month, Zillow announced it would temporarily stop buying new homes. At the time, it blamed a lack of workers to fix up and sell the houses it had bought. But on Tuesday, Mr. Barton said using its algorithm to buy and sell houses had not produced predictable profits.

Although Zillow and Trulia have the same corporate owner, there is some difference in the interface for both websites. Zillow has a more graphic experience for searching for a home, while Trulia has a relatively simple design. In addition, Zillow, unlike Trulia, goes beyond the U.S. in its listings.
