THREE GREAT WORDPRESS PLUGINS

3 WordPress Plugins That Every Good Blog Should Have

There are literally hundreds of WordPress plugins that you can use to modify your blog. I’m going to cover the 3 essential ones that every good blog should have. You can add others later on when you get comfortable with the process and figure out exactly what you want your blog to do.

The #1 Plugin that your blog should have is an SEO plugin. I recommend either All in One SEO or Platinum SEO. They’re both good and you can install them right from your WordPress admin panel. So, let’s get to it. Keep in mind that you only need one of these two plugins, not both.

Go to your WordPress admin panel and click on Plugins in the left sidebar. Then click on Add New. Type in Platinum SEO into the search box and click on the Search Plugins button. Click on the Install Now link under the name of the correct plugin and then click OK when the confirmation pop up box comes up to install it onto your blog. Next click on the Activate Plugin link to activate it.

You will then be sent back to the Plugins page where you can view your newly installed plugin. Follow the same steps outlined above to install a plugin called Contact Form 8. Then go through the process again to install a plugin called Tell A Friend.

Tell A Friend is a plugin that will allow readers of your blog to share your posts with their friends, other blogs, social networks, and social bookmarking networks. It’s a great way to let your readers syndicate your blog around the internet and bring in more traffic. Tell A Friend comes preconfigured so there is nothing else that you need to do to it.

You will notice that Platinum SEO has its own section in the left sidebar. Click on Platinum SEO to be taken to the configuration page. Many of the most important options are preset for your by default. The main things that you need to worry about are the top 3 boxes: Home Title, Home Description, and Home Keywords. Fill in these boxes accordingly.

What you enter in the Home Description box is what will be displayed to readers when a search engine pulls up your blog listing. Write something enticing that will make readers want to click on your blog.

Put in your blog’s main keyword in the Home Keywords field. When you are done filling in all of the information, click the Update Options button at the bottom of the screen.

Now click on Contact in the left sidebar. It also got its own section in your sidebar when you activated the plugin. Not all plugins that you add to your site will get their own section, but many of them will.

The most important thing that you need to make sure is correct on this page is the email address in the To: box in the Mail section. When people fill in your contact form and click on the submit button, this is the email address that will receive those emails.

The email address that you set up WordPress with should be in that box by default. If that’s not the email address that you want to receive reader mail to, then change it now and click on the Save button at the top right.

The next few steps are in regards to creating a contact page with your new Contact plugin. From the Contact settings page, copy the code that appears in the top box. It should look something like this: [ contact-form 1 “Contact form 1” ]

Next click on Pages in the left sidebar. From here we’re going to click on the Add New button at the top of the screen.

Title your page something like Contact or Contact Us. In the text box, write a short paragraph about the various reasons that someone may contact you. Once you have written a short basic paragraph on your contact page it’s time to add that code that we copied earlier. But before you do that, you need to switch over to HTML mode.

There are two tabs at the top of the large text entry block: Visual and HTML. Click on the tab that says HTML. See, that wasn’t so hard, was it? Now paste the code that we copied earlier under the paragraph that you wrote.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page and fill out all of the blank information boxes. When you’re done, scroll back up and click on the button that says Publish on the top right hand side.
